This is the second coin in the Austrian Mint's Shining Ocean Worlds series. The new series from the Austrian Mint was inspired by the United Nations, which has proclaimed the “Decade of Ocean Exploration” from 2021 to 2030. The luminous marine worlds are dedicated to the underwater treasure that needs to be preserved and is endangered by humans. The swell shark is another example of how fascinating and colorful the underwater world can be. It can inflate its belly with water and even begin to glow on its own. Although this glow is not visible to the human eye, it is unmistakable on this coin. The mintage of this coin is limited to 65,000 pieces worldwide.
The motif side of the coin shows a swell in the water with a sandy seabed, corals and small fish can be seen in the background. The colorful motif is surrounded by a historical porthole, which is decorated with a starfish and a shell. When the shark is illuminated with UV light, its body begins to glow green. The year of issue “2023” and the name of the animal can also be found on this side.
The value side of the coin shows the silhouettes of various marine animals that will appear in the coin series, such as the blue-ringed octopus, accompanied by air bubbles. It also shows the face value “3 EURO” and the issuing country “REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH”.
