About the Maple Leaf Gold

The Maple Leaf Gold was first minted in 1979 by the Royal Canadian Mint and is one of the oldest gold investment coins in the world. After the Krugerrand coin, it is the most widely distributed gold coin in the world. In terms of mintage, it has even surpassed the Krugerrand coin. Since 1988, this iconic coin has also been available in silver and platinum versions. In 2005, palladium was added to the list of precious metals used in its production.

The design and special features of the Maple Leaf Gold

The design of the Maple Leaf Gold is simple and elegant. A maple leaf adorns the front of the coin. It is depicted as a symbol of the Canadian national flag and gives the Maple Leaf gold coin its name. As with all Commonwealth coins, the reverse side featured a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, which was continuously updated to reflect her current appearance. After her death in 2022, the portrait of the reigning King Charles III has adorned the reverse side since 2024. Since 2013, the Maple Leaf 1 oz has featured an additional optical security feature in the form of a smaller maple leaf with the last two digits of the year of minting. The inscription is in both of Canada's national languages, English and French.
