More about Gold Britannia 1 oz - 2024
The Gold Britannia is a British gold coin which has been minted since 1987 by The Royal Mint and was the first European bullion coin. The value of the Britannia gold coin is marked in British Pound and is legal tender in Great Britain. Since 1987, the coin is available in units of 1/10 ounce, 1/2 ounce and 1 ounce. The fineness of the Gold Britannia is at 999,9 since 2013. Before that, it was at 916,7 — equaling 22 Karat. Until 1989, an alloy of copper (1/12), which gave the coin a reddish colour was used. Afterwards, copper and silver were used in the same ratio.
A silver coin has been issued alongside the Britannia gold coin since 1997. With the minting year 2021, the classic design of the Britannia gold coin by Philip Nathan was supplemented by new design elements and security features called “Bullion Security”. Since 2023, the official portrait of King Charles III can be seen on the Britannia bullion coins.
The design of the gold coin
The design side of the Britannia gold coin shows the Roman deity and personification of the country “Britannia” as a standing figure with helmet, shield and trident. The motif is framed by the lettering “BRITANNIA 2024”, as well as the fine weight and fineness “1oz 999.9 FINE GOLD”. The background of the motif side is finished with a wave shape. Thanks to a special embossing technique, the waves appear to move when the viewing angle is changed. A security feature has also been added to the motif, which shows a lock as a symbol of security when viewed from an angle of 90 degrees. If the viewer's angle of vision changes, the lock becomes a trident, one of the defining symbols of the Britannia coin. The new edition of the design side is rounded off by the Latin inscription “DECUS ET TUTAMEN” for “Glory and Defense”.
The value side of the gold coin shows the first coin portrait of King Charles III, who has reigned since 2022. The portrait of the King was created by the well-known British sculptor Martin Jennings and personally approved by His Majesty. In keeping with tradition, the portrait of the King is facing left, i.e. in the opposite direction to Queen Elizabeth II. The portrait is framed by the words “CHARLES III - D-G-REX-F-D” and the face value of “100 POUNDS”.
