The Vienna Philharmonic Gold Coin is an Austrian gold coin issued by the Austrian Mint since 1989. The Gold Philharmonic is the second European investment gold coin after the Gold Britannia and has the status of legal tender. Since the currency change in 2002, the coin has been denominated in euros instead of schillings. To this day, it remains the only investment coin in Europe with a euro face value.

The Design of the Gold Coin

The design of the gold coin has remained largely the same apart from the minting year: On the obverse of the Vienna Philharmonic Gold Coin, the famous great organ from the Golden Hall of the Vienna Musikverein is depicted. On the reverse of the Gold Philharmonic, there are instruments from the Vienna Orchestra – a horn, a bassoon, a harp, four violins, and a cello in the center. The Vienna Philharmonic Gold has a fineness of 999. Initially, the coin was issued as 1 oz and 1/4 oz; it is now also available as 1/2 oz, 1/10 oz, and since 2014 as 1/25 oz. The selling price corresponds to the current gold market price plus a small premium. The Vienna Gold Philharmonic is especially significant in North America and Japan. Since 2008, the Vienna Philharmonic has also been available as a silver coin.
