This gold coin from the renowned Austrian Mint is the next issue in the "Austria’s Unsung Heroines" series. The series has been issued annually since 2023 and honors exceptional women who set standards through their achievements and achieved outstanding success despite many challenges. The third edition of the five-part series features one of the most important personalities in Austrian architectural history: Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky. Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky was a pioneering architect and resistance fighter. Born in Vienna in 1897, she set an important accent in modern architecture with her “Frankfurt Kitchen”. As one of the few women in a male-dominated industry, she fought for functional living and social architecture. She risked her life in the resistance against National Socialism. After the war, she campaigned for reconstruction, women's rights and peace. Her achievements were honored many times, including with the Austrian Decoration of Honor for Science and Art. This coin honors the architect Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky, a pioneer who made a lasting contribution to architectural history with visionary designs such as the famous “Frankfurt Kitchen”.
The 50 euro coin has a weight of ¼ ounce of gold (Au 986). The coin is available in proof quality (PF) and has a smooth edge. The coin has a limited mintage of just 20,000 and is presented in a stylish case that includes a numbered certificate of authenticity.
The design of the coin
The obverse of the coin shows an impressive portrait of the architect in front of a stylized ground plan symbolizing her visionary works. The inscription “REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH” and her name “MARGARETE SCHÜTTE-LIHOTZKY” frame the motif on both sides. The country of issue “REPUBLIC OF AUSTRIA” is depicted on the left edge, the year of issue “2025” and the face value “50 EURO” can be found at the bottom edge of the coin.
An artistic collage of her most important achievements is depicted on the reverse: The “Frankfurt Kitchen” as a groundbreaking concept for modern living, the Hietzinger Werkbund Estate as a milestone in the history of Viennese architecture and a youthful portrait showing Schütte-Lihotzky as a courageous and visionary personality.
