The series “The Queens's Beasts” comprises ten different coins and is issued by the British Royal Mint. The “Falcon of the Plantagenets” is the sixth motif in this series after the Black Bull of Clarence. The series is dedicated to the history of the English monarchy. Further coins will be released by 2021, including the “The White Lion of Mortimer”. The coin is the official means of payment in England and is characterized by a nominal value of 100 pounds. 

Design of the coin

The coin series is inspired by ancient symbols of power and identity. The falcon of the Plantagenets, an ancient ruling dynasty from France, was placed on the motif side as a shield holder. The image of the falcon is repeated on the shield.

First used by Edward III, the falcon was also used as a royal badge by his grandson Richard II. Richard II's uncles also used the falcon as a motif. This included John of Gaunt, ancestor of the House of Lancaster. However, the falcon was particularly associated with the House of York, which was descended from John's brother Edmund of Langley.

The falcon was widely used by Edward IV, who often had the falcon depicted on shields: The falcon sits on a golden, slightly open fessellock to symbolize Edward's claim to the English throne. The falcon was later adopted by Henry VII, who united the houses of York and Lancaster. Under Elizabeth I, the falcon was finally accepted as an established royal animal.

At the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, the Plantagenet falcon took its place as one of the Queen's beasts, alongside the lion, the unicorn, the dragon, the griffin, the yale, the greyhound, the horse and the white lion. The falcon held a shield with the personal badge of Edward IV.

The obverse of the coin shows the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Around the portrait is the inscription “D G REG F D”, which means Dei Gratia Regina, Fidei Defensor (Queen by the Grace of God, Defender of the Faith). There is also the face value and the letters “JC” in small letters for the designer of the coin, Jody Clark.
