The American Eagle silver coin is a US silver coin which, like the American Eagle gold coin, has been minted by the US Mint since 1986 and was the first pure silver coin in the USA. The reason for its minting was the import ban on the South African Krugerrand due to the apartheid policy. Accordingly, the silver American Eagle quickly gained in importance.

The motif of the American Eagle silver coin, which remains the same every year, shows the figure of “Walking Liberty” on the obverse with laurel and oak branches in her hand and the American flag draped over her shoulder. This motif was first used on the 1/2 dollar silver coins from 1916 to 1947. The reverse of the silver American Eagle features the heraldic eagle, based on the Great Seal of the United States, surrounded by 13 stars, symbolizing the original 13 colonies of the United States in 1776.

The silver American Eagle is issued as a 1 ounce coin with a fineness of 999.9, making it the largest and heaviest silver coin in the USA. With a face value of 1 US dollar, the coin is considered official currency.
