The new coin series from the Austrian Mint combines tradition and craftsmanship. Just as the kilt is for Scotland or the kimono for Japan, the dirndl and lederhosen symbolize deeply rooted cultural values in Austria. This series honors traditional materials like linen, loden, leather, and horn, which are used in traditional costumes and artisanal crafts. Each coin features detailed depictions of craftsmanship, tools, and men and women in traditional attire. Originally worn as workwear by rural populations, dirndls and lederhosen were adopted by nobility over 100 years ago and today represent a stylish symbol of Austrian heritage. The series is released in multiple phases: first comes "Aufdirndln – Linen", followed by "Aufbrezeln – Leather". "Aufjuchazn – Loden" will be released in spring 2026, and the series concludes with "Aufpirschen – Horn" in fall 2026.
The first coin, "Aufdirndln – Linen", is dedicated to traditional linen – the fabric that shaped the dirndl in the 19th century. Linen represents both tradition and environmental consciousness. The artistic engravings in silver and copper capture the essence of the dirndl – with a flowing skirt, printed apron, and loving details. This coin is a tribute to the dirndl, a symbol of joy and Austrian costume culture. Produced in the special finish Handgehoben (Hand-Selected), it is presented in an elegant gift box. The coin is strictly limited to an edition of only 30,000 pieces.
The obverse side of the coin features a woman in a linen blouse and a decorated, sleeveless dirndl with an apron. In her basket and raised left hand, she holds flax blossoms, the plant from the flax family used to make linen. The background is adorned with a decorative band featuring flax flowers.
The reverse side of the coin shows tools used in linen processing and handmade products crafted from linen. The three spools on the left, called “bobbin lace spindles,” are used to create horizontally patterned lace. The face value “10 EURO” and the year of issue “2025” are also inscribed. The inscription “REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH” completes the design.
