This is the latest release in the "Luminous Marine Worlds" series by Münze Österreich. The series was inspired by the United Nations’ declaration of the "Decade of Ocean Science" from 2021 to 2030. The Luminous Marine Worlds series is dedicated to the treasures of the underwater world, which must be preserved and are increasingly endangered by human activity.

The humpback dragonfish, also known as the false stonefish, belongs to the scorpionfish family. It is one of around 180 fish species in which biofluorescence has been detected. It can emit a deep red glow. The twelfth and final 3-euro coin in the "Luminous Marine Worlds" series is among those special coins that change color under UV light. The humpback dragonfish lives in the Red Sea and the tropical Indo-Pacific. It has a compact, slightly humped body, surrounded by 45 vertical rows of scales. Its head and mouth are large, while its eyes are small and positioned high. Its body is often mottled, and the hard spines on its dorsal fin contain a painful venom. The fish lives a solitary life on the sea floor, mostly in rocky habitats at depths between 1 and 70 meters, but can also be found on sandy bottoms. It is often partially buried. The humpback dragonfish mainly feeds on other fish. It usually lies in wait for prey, sometimes buried, and strikes in a lightning-fast motion. These fish have no teeth — prey is sucked into the wide-open mouth and swallowed whole without chewing.

Coin Design

The obverse of the coin depicts a humpback dragonfish; one of its front fins extends into the frame of the porthole. In the background, coral, rocks, and a small school of fish can be seen. When exposed to UV light, the dragonfish changes color: from light brown and reddish-brown to red. The coin “The Humpback Dragonfish” is a UV-effect coin, a collector’s item, and a great gift. The motif is framed by a historical porthole with the year of issue "2025" and the name of the species.

The reverse of the coin, designed in the style of a silhouette cut-out, presents all the sea creatures featured in the 12-part "Luminous Marine Worlds" series. Between them are air bubbles, and to the right, a tail fin dipping into waves. It also shows the face value "3 EURO" and the issuing country "REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH".
