This is the latest release in the "Luminous Marine Worlds" series from the Austrian Mint. The series was inspired by the United Nations’ proclamation of the "Decade of Ocean Science" from 2021 to 2030. The Luminous Marine Worlds series is dedicated to the treasures beneath the sea that must be preserved — treasures that are increasingly endangered by human activity.

The nudibranch is a fascinating example of natural beauty and biological sophistication. Its glowing, colorful body serves to deter predators — through warning coloration and biofluorescence. Although invisible to the human eye, this biofluorescence can be detected by predatory fish. Instead of a protective shell, the nudibranch uses toxins for defense. One especially clever trick: it assimilates the stinging cells of its prey (such as sea anemones) and repurposes them as weapons. Nudibranchs are hermaphrodites, meaning they are both male and female, which makes reproduction easier as partners can fertilize each other. Their ornate egg clusters contain thousands of eggs, from which larvae with tiny shells hatch. These shells are only lost once the animals settle on the ocean floor and develop into adults.

The Design of the Coin

The obverse of the coin shows a nudibranch appearing to crawl out of a porthole. In the background, a colorful coral reef teeming with small fish stretches across the scene. Under UV light, the nudibranch begins to glow — its colors shift from light red-violet to bright red, or from blue to a vivid green. The motif is framed by a historical-style porthole featuring the issue year "2025" and the name of the species.

The reverse side of the coin features silhouettes of various marine creatures that appear in the 12-part series, such as the blue-ringed octopus, surrounded by air bubbles. It also includes the face value "3 EURO" and the issuing country "REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH" (Republic of Austria).
