This is the fourth coin in the Austrian Mint's Shining Ocean Worlds series. The new series from the Austrian Mint was inspired by the United Nations, which has proclaimed the “Decade of Ocean Exploration” from 2021 to 2030. The coin portrays the deep-sea frogfish. A coin without a design, as black as the deep sea. You can literally see black on it. The deep-sea monster - Spherical body, large head, mouth studded with long fangs: deep-sea frogfish are bizarre-looking creatures that can be found in all the world's oceans below a depth of 300 meters. The females have a body length of between 6 cm and 1.2 m. It is astonishing how much smaller the males are: In most cases, they only grow to a few centimeters in length.

The design side of the coin shows only a black area. The motif is framed by a historical porthole with the year of issue “2023” and the name of the animal. Scales and luminous fittings can also be seen. Only when illuminated with UV light does the coin image appear: it shows a deep-sea frogfish glowing red and green with its mouth open, full of long pointed teeth and a glowing fishing rod on its forehead. The light attracts a small fish.
The value side of the coin shows the silhouettes of various sea creatures that will feature in the coin series, such as the blue-ringed octopus, accompanied by air bubbles. It also shows the face value “3 EURO” and the issuing country “REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH”.
