Information about Gold Austria’s Unsung Heroines - "Veza Canetti" 50 EUR AUT PF - 2024

This gold coin from the renowned Austrian Mint is the next in the "Austria’s Unsung Heroines" series. The second of the five collector coins depicts Veza Canetti, an author from the first half of the 20th century. During her lifetime, there was only one publication under her name. Her work was only discovered posthumously. Born Venetiana Taubner-Calderon, she married Elias Canetti in 1934. In 1938, she fled with him to London, where she worked as a translator to support herself and her husband. She remained in the background as a mentor and advisor to her husband in artistic matters. Nobel Prize winner Elias Canetti on his wife's contribution to the success of “Mass and Power”: “Veza's intellectual contribution to it is as great as mine. There is not a syllable in it that we did not consider and discuss together.

The 50 euro coin series "Austria’s Unsung Heroines" is dedicated to special Austrian women. The coin has a weight of ¼ ounce of gold (Ag 986). The coin is available in proof quality (PF) and has a smooth edge.

The design of the coin

The motif page shows portraits of Veza and her husband Elias Canetti, with her standing in the shadow of the Nobel Prize winner for literature. Her portrait is surrounded by text excerpts from her works The Yellow Road and Patience Brings Roses.

On the obverse, the author Veza Canetti is depicted in three-quarter view. The right edge of the coin shows a torn book page. At the left edge is the issuing country 'REBUBLIK ÖSTERREICH', the year of issue '2024' and the face value '50 EURO' at the bottom of the coin.
