The Gold Britannia is a British gold coin struck by The Royal Mint since 1987 and was the first European gold investment coin at the time. The face value of the Britannia gold coin is denominated in British pounds. It is legal tender in the UK. Since 1987, the coin has been available in sizes of 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1 oz. The fineness of the Gold Britannia has been 999.9 since 2013; before that, it was 916.7 (22 carat). Until 1989, one-twelfth copper was used in the alloy, giving the coin a reddish hue. Afterward, copper and silver were used in equal parts.

Since 1997, a silver coin has also been issued alongside the Britannia gold coin. With the 2021 minting year, Philip Nathan’s classic design of the gold Britannia was enhanced with new design elements and security features called "Bullion Security." Since 2023, the official portrait of King Charles III appears on the Britannia investment coins.

The Design of the Gold Coin

The obverse of the Britannia gold coin depicts the Roman goddess and personification of the nation, "Britannia," as a standing figure with helmet, shield, and trident. The design is surrounded by the inscription "BRITANNIA 2026," along with the fine weight and fineness "1oz 999.9 FINE GOLD." The background features a wave pattern that appears to move when viewed from different angles, created by a special minting technique. Additionally, a security feature reveals a padlock at a 90-degree viewing angle, which changes into a trident, one of the coin's iconic symbols, when the angle shifts. The design is completed with the Latin phrase "DECUS ET TUTAMEN," meaning "An ornament and a safeguard."

The reverse shows the first coin portrait of King Charles III, who has reigned since 2022. The portrait, created by the renowned British sculptor Martin Jennings and personally approved by His Majesty, faces left -opposite the direction of Queen Elizabeth II’s portrait. The portrait is surrounded by the inscriptions "CHARLES III - D-G-REX-F-D" and the nominal value of "100 POUNDS."
