The Gold Britannia is a British gold coin that has been minted by The Royal Mint since 1987 and was the first European gold bullion coin at the time of its introduction. It was created in honour of Britannia, the female personification of Great Britain, and embodies the virtues of strength, resilience and courage.  The face value of the Britannia gold coin is denominated in British pounds and it is recognised as legal tender in the United Kingdom. Since 1987, the gold coin has been available in sizes of 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz and 1 oz. Since 2013, the Gold Britannia has had a fineness of 999.9. 

The Proof finish is particularly popular among collectors and is one of the most elaborate coin production methods. The coin is supplied in a coin case including a numbered certificate of authenticity.

The worldwide mintage of this exclusive gold coin is limited to just 500 pieces.

The Design of the Gold Coin

The reverse of the Britannia gold coin features the iconic allegorical figure of Britannia in a modern and powerful depiction. She stands by the sea, looking towards the horizon and holding a trident, symbolising her maritime strength and Great Britain's historic naval power. In her other hand, she holds a shield bearing the Union Jack motif, representing protection and national identity. Dynamic waves and a lighthouse can be seen in the background. The inscription “BRITANNIA” appears along the upper edge, accompanied by the year of issue “2026”. The fine weight and fineness, “1/10 oz 999.9 FINE GOLD”, are also displayed on the reverse.

The obverse of the coin features the portrait of King Charles III. Surrounding the portrait is the inscription “CHARLES III D G REX F D” (Charles the Third, by the Grace of God, King, Defender of the Faith). The obverse also features the face value “10 POUNDS” as well as the initials “MJ” of British sculptor Martin Jennings, who designed the official portrait of King Charles III.
