The Royal Australian Mint's popular Dolphin series is now in its sixth and final issue. In various cultures, the dolphin symbolizes luck, strength and protection.

The first issue featured the best-known member of the dolphin family, the Bottlenose Dolphin. While the second issue was dedicated to the East Pacific dolphin (spinner dolphin), the following issues showed the Fraser's dolphin, the Dusky dolphin and the Rough-Toothed dolphin. The final edition now shows the Hourglass Dolphin. This dolphin lives in Antarctic and sub-Antarctic waters, prefers deep water and rarely ventures into waters warmer than 13 degrees Celsius. The dainty dolphin is up to 1.8 meters long and weighs up to 120 kilograms, with the females presumably being larger than the males. The animals have reportedly been seen surfing the bow wave of speedboats. They can swim at speeds of up to 22 kilometers per hour.

This coin is issued with a mintage of 250 pieces.

The design of the gold coin

The design side of the coin shows two Hourglass Dolphins with their distinctive markings (reminiscent of an hourglass) as they frolic in the water. The design side also features the weight and fineness “1 oz .9999 FINE GOLD”, as well as the words “HOURGLASS DOLPHIN”. The value side of the coin shows the portrait of King Charles III. Around the portrait is the inscription “CHARLES III” and the country of origin as well as the year of minting “AUSTRALIA 2024”. The face value “100 DOLLARS” is also shown below the portrait.
