This special gold coin, struck in the highest quality Proof and in High Relief, is dedicated by the Perth Mint to a true Australian icon: the Australian kangaroo.

The Australian Nugget (Gold Kangaroo) is an Australian gold coin first minted by the Perth Mint in 1986. It has gained worldwide popularity, particularly due to the annually changing designs on the obverse. The coin has a fineness of 999.9 and is considered legal tender. Since 1987, the Australian Nugget has been issued in four denominations (1oz / 1/2oz / 1/4oz / 1/10oz), with face values ranging from 5 to 100 Australian dollars. Larger denominations weighing 2 ounces, 10 ounces, and 1 kilogram are also available. Until 1989, the obverse of the coin featured unique gold nuggets found in Australia — hence the name Australian Nugget. Since 1990, the gold coin has featured annually changing kangaroo designs, and has been officially known as the “Australian Kangaroo” ever since.

Proof coins are especially sought after by collectors and represent one of the most elaborate minting processes for coins. The Perth Mint’s Kangaroo gold coin is strictly limited to just 500 pieces worldwide and is delivered in its original coin case with a numbered certificate of authenticity.

The design of the gold coin

The reverse side of the coin features two kangaroos. A large kangaroo is lying on its side, basking in the warm sunlight on Australia’s dry ground. The other stands tall on its legs, ready to leap. The two animals are depicted in their natural habitat, alongside a Xanthorrhoea australis, also known as a grass tree. The design is framed by the inscriptions "KANGAROO," the year of issue "2025," and the Perth Mint’s mintmark "P." Additionally, the weight and fineness "1/4 oz 9999 GOLD" are displayed.

The obverse side of the coin shows the portrait of King Charles III. Surrounding the portrait are the inscriptions "CHARLES III" and the issuing country "AUSTRALIA." Beneath the portrait, the face value "25 DOLLARS" is also shown.
