The Australian Kangaroo (Australian Nugget) is an Australian gold coin that was first minted by the Perth Mint in 1986 and enjoys worldwide popularity thanks to the annually changing designs on the motif side. The coin has a purity of 999.9 and is considered official currency. Since 1987, the gold coin has been minted in denominations of 1/20 ounce, 1/10 ounce, 1/4 ounce, 1/2 ounce and 1 ounce, with a face value of between 5 and 100 Australian dollars. There are now also larger denominations weighing 2 ounces, 10 ounces and 1 kilogram. In 2010, a 2-dollar version of the coin was issued with a weight of 0.5 grams. In 2011, the Perth Mint also introduced an edition of the coin with a weight of 1 tonne - making the gold kangaroo both the smallest and largest bullion coin in the world. Until 1989, unusual gold nuggets found in Australia were depicted on the reverse of the coin - hence the name Australian Nugget. Since 1990, the gold coin has shown annually changing motifs of kangaroos, and the official name since then has been “Australian Kangaroo”. Larger units of the gold kangaroo, such as the 2-ounce, 10-ounce and 1-kilogram versions, bear the same “Red Kangaroo” motif every year.
The design of the gold coin
The design side of the coin shows two kangaroos. One large kangaroo is lying on its side, basking in the warm sunlight on Australia's dry ground. The other stands high on its legs, ready to pounce. The two animals are depicted in their natural habitat, together with a Xanthorrhoea australis, also known as a grass tree. The motif is framed by the lettering “KANGAROO”, the year of issue “2025” and the Perth Mint's mintmark “P”. The fine weight and the fineness “1 oz 9999 GOLD” can also be seen.
The value side of the coin shows the portrait of King Charles III. Around the portrait is the inscription “CHARLES III” and the country of origin “AUSTRALIA”. The face value “100 DOLLARS” is also shown under the portrait.
