The Australian Kangaroo (Australian Nugget) is an Australian gold coin first issued in 1986 by the Perth Mint. It has gained worldwide popularity thanks to its annually changing reverse designs. The coin has a fineness of 999.9 and is recognized as legal tender. Since 1987, the gold coin has been minted in denominations of 1/20 oz, 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1 oz, with face values ranging from 5 to 100 Australian dollars. Larger sizes, such as 2 oz, 10 oz, and 1 kg versions, have since been added. In 2010, a 2-dollar version weighing 0.5 grams was introduced, and in 2011, the Perth Mint produced a 1-tonne coin – making the Gold Kangaroo both the smallest and largest bullion coin in the world. Until 1989, the coin’s reverse featured images of remarkable gold nuggets found in Australia, giving rise to its original name, the Australian Nugget. Since 1990, the gold coin has featured annually changing motifs of kangaroos, and its official name has been “Australian Kangaroo.” Larger denominations such as the 2 oz, 10 oz, and 1 kg versions feature the consistent “Red Kangaroo” design each year.

Design of the Gold Coin

The reverse side of the coin shows two kangaroos dynamically leaping through shimmering water. In the background, gentle water splashes and ripples are framed by a picturesque mountain landscape. Each coin also bears a small privy mark with the number “40,” commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Australian Nugget Series. The motif is encircled by the inscriptions “KANGAROO,” the year “2026,” the mintmark “P” of the Perth Mint, as well as the specifications “9999 GOLD.”

The obverse of the coin depicts the portrait of King Charles III, designed by Dan Thorne. Surrounding the portrait are the inscriptions “CHARLES III” and “AUSTRALIA.” Below the portrait, the respective face value of the coin is engraved.
