The koala is one of Australia’s recognized symbols and has been a protected species since 1937 due to threats posed by humans. These sleepy and gentle creatures spend most of their time resting or eating eucalyptus leaves in Australia’s forests. Since 2007, the Australian Perth Mint has been issuing the Australian Koala as a silver coin series in honor of this famous marsupial. Since 2008, the coin has also been available in gold. With the coin Gold Koala 1/2 oz Proof, the Perth Mint now presents for the first time a 1/2 oz Gold Koala in the popular Proof quality. Proof quality coins are particularly sought after by collectors and represent one of the most intricate coin production methods.

With a worldwide mintage of only 250 pieces, this gold coin is strictly limited and comes in its original coin case with a numbered certificate of authenticity.

The Design of the Gold Coin

The coin’s reverse captures the essence of these gentle creatures. The 2025 design depicts a day in the life of a koala—high up in the calm sanctuary of the eucalyptus canopy. The motif is surrounded by the inscription “KOALA” as well as the year of issue and the coin’s fineness: “2025 1/2oz 9999 GOLD.” The Perth Mint’s “P” mintmark also appears.

The obverse of the coin features the effigy of King Charles III. Around the portrait are the inscriptions “CHARLES III” and “AUSTRALIA.” Beneath the portrait is the denomination “50 DOLLARS.”
