The Australian Kookaburra coin has been issued annually with changing designs since 1990. Known worldwide as the Australian Kookaburra, the coin takes its name from the world's largest kingfisher. The annually changing motifs make the Kookaburra highly sought after as both an investment and collector coin. Kookaburras (also known as laughing kookaburras) are large birds measuring up to 48 cm in length, predominantly brown-grey and white in colour, and are native to Australia, Tasmania and New Guinea. The distinctive calls of the Kookaburra resemble loud, almost hysterical laughter, which is why the bird is often associated with its characteristic laughing call.

The Kookaburra was first issued in 2020 in the 5 oz and 2 oz gold denominations in the highly sought-after Proof quality. Since 2021, a 1/4 oz gold edition has also complemented this premium series. In 2025, to mark the 35th anniversary of the Kookaburra, the gold series was expanded for the first time with an exclusive 1 oz edition. Proof (PF) is one of the most elaborate minting techniques used for collector coins and is characterised by frosted motifs set against a highly polished, mirror-like background. High Relief means that the motif is struck with greater depth, giving the design a more three-dimensional, detailed and exceptionally expressive appearance. This exclusive gold coin is strictly limited to a worldwide mintage of only 50 pieces. It is supplied in the original presentation case together with a certificate of authenticity from The Perth Mint.

The design of the gold coin

The reverse of the coin depicts a kookaburra in flight above a river, framed by lush trees and rugged rock formations. The design is surrounded by the inscription "KOOKABURRA", The Perth Mint's "P" mintmark, as well as the weight, fineness and year of issue "2026". The obverse of the coin features the portrait of King Charles III. Surrounding the portrait are the inscription "CHARLES III" and the issuing country "AUSTRALIA". The face value "500 DOLLARS" is additionally displayed beneath the portrait.
