The Gold Krugerrand is a South African gold coin that has been minted at the Rand Refinery in Germiston, near Johannesburg, since 1967. It is the most common gold bullion coin in the world and is available in denominations of 1 ounce, 1/2 ounce, 1/4 ounce and 1/10 ounce. The purity of the Krugerrand gold coin is 916.7 and the copper alloy gives the coin a reddish color and increases its scratch resistance. Although the gold Krugerrand has no currency indication on the coin, it is considered an official means of payment in South Africa. As every year, the South African Mint issues a limited special edition and minting as a set with the minting quality proof. The proof quality (PF) is particularly sought after by collectors and is one of the most elaborate production processes for a coin.
This exclusive prestige set is limited to just 400 pieces worldwide. It contains 6 denominations of the world-famous gold coin: 1 ounce gold, 1/2 ounce gold, 1/4 ounce gold, 1/10 ounce gold, 1/20 ounce gold and 1/50 ounce gold (PP), with a total fine weight of around 59.72g gold. The 1/20 ounce denomination is not otherwise available in stores, but only as part of this exclusive and strictly limited set. The prestige set comes in a fine wooden case with a numbered certificate of authenticity.
The design of the gold coin
On the design side of the coin is the portrait of South African President Paul Kruger (1882-1902), who is also the namesake of the coin. The name Rand refers to the South African currency, the Rand. Kruger's portrait is framed by the lettering of the issuing country SUID-AFRIKA-SOUTH AFRICA. The year of issue and the legendary springbok antelope, the heraldic animal of the Republic of South Africa, are depicted on the value side of the coin. In addition, a typical South African semi-desert is depicted in the background of the antelope. The initials CLS of the South African sculptor Coert Lourens Steynberg are integrated on the value side alongside the indication of the fine weight.
