The highly anticipated latest issue in the Perth Mint's third lunar series continues with the stunning motif of the Chinese dragon. The dragon is the fifth character of the twelve-year lunar calendar. This reflects the traditional story in which the Jade Emperor pitted the twelve signs of the zodiac against each other in a race across a river to decide in which order they should be entered into the calendar. Those born in 2024, 2012, 2000, 1988, 1976 and every 12th previous year under the sign of the Chinese dragon are considered ambitious, successful and charismatic.

In addition to the classic investment version in the usual denominations, the Perth Mint is also issuing the proof version of the Lunar III dragon in gold in the denominations 1 oz, ¼ oz and 1/10 oz. The proof (PF) is particularly sought after by collectors and is one of the most elaborate production processes for a coin. As a special highlight for collectors, each coin is issued with a capsule including a numbered certificate of authenticity and a high-quality red case with gold engraving and magnetic closure. The illustrations on the boxes show the story of the Great Race, in which the order of the animals in the Chinese zodiac was determined.

This special gold coin is strictly limited with a worldwide mintage of only 1.000.

The design of the coin

The dominant center of the motif side shows a fearsome dragon. The characteristic design of the dragon is characterized by its serpentine body shape, scales and curved horns. Waves and stylized mist are also depicted. The Chinese character for dragon “龍”, the inscription “DRAGON 2024” and the Perth Mint's mintmark “P125” (which symbolizes the 125th anniversary of the Perth Mint) can be seen next to the motif.

The value side of the coin shows the Jody Clark portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The words “ELIZABETH II 1952 - 2022” and “AUSTRALIA” are stamped above. The face value of “100 DOLLARS”, the weight “1 oz” and the fineness “999.9” adorn the bottom of the coin
