The latest release in the Perth Mint Lunar III Series is dedicated to the Goat. The beautifully crafted design draws inspiration from the Chinese zodiac, in which the Goat represents the eighth sign of the twelve-year lunar calendar. According to legend, the Jade Emperor invited all the animals to take part in a great race to determine the order of the twelve zodiac signs. On the way to the finish line, the gentle yet determined Goat joined forces with the Monkey and the Rooster. Together, they managed to cross a wide river before the Goat was the first of the group to reach the opposite bank, ultimately finishing in eighth place. People born in 2027, 2015, 2003, 1991, 1979 and every twelfth preceding year under the sign of the Chinese Goat are considered gentle, creative and compassionate. They are said to possess a calm nature, resilience, artistic talent and a particularly thoughtful approach to life. 

In addition to the classic bullion version available in the usual denominations, The Perth Mint also issues the Lunar Series in gold as a Proof edition. The Proof finish is particularly popular among collectors and is one of the most elaborate minting techniques used in coin production. As a special highlight for collectors, each coin is supplied in a capsule together with a numbered Certificate of Authenticity and a premium red presentation case featuring gold detailing. When placed side by side, the illustrations on the outer boxes tell the story of the Great Race that determined the order of the animals in the Chinese zodiac. This exceptional gold coin is strictly limited to a worldwide mintage of only 3,500 pieces.

The design of the gold coin

The reverse depicts a majestic Goat standing proudly in a mountainous landscape. Rugged terrain and a solitary tree in the background emphasise the natural character of the scene. The design is complemented by the Chinese character for Goat, the inscription “GOAT 2027” and The Perth Mint’s “P” mintmark. The reverse was designed by Wade Robinson.

The obverse features the portrait of King Charles III designed by Dan Thorne. Surrounding the portrait are the inscription “CHARLES III AUSTRALIA” as well as the specifications “1/4oz”, “9999 Au” and the face value of “25 DOLLARS”.
