This striking gold coin has been issued by the Banco de Mexico at the Casa de Moneda mint since 1981.

In 1991, the Mexican Mint also introduced the smaller denominations of 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz and 1/20 oz. The coin was redesigned as part of the 1996 issue. The resulting design is still used today.

Another special feature of the Gold Libertad is that although this gold coin does not have a minted face value, it is still legal tender in Mexico. The current value is based on the material value determined daily on the stock exchange and is calculated according to the fine weight of the national currency.

The design of the gold coin

The obverse of the Gold Mexico Libertad features the coat of arms of Mexico. The modern coat of arms design is located in the center of the obverse. It is surrounded by a ring containing 10 historical versions of the coat of arms from the past 200 years.

The reverse shows the image of the winged goddess of victory of Mexico. The depiction of the winged goddess of victory has existed since the 1820s and serves as an impressive symbol of Mexico's triumph over Spain during the War of Independence.
