This special gold coin has been issued by the Banco de Mexico at the Casa de Moneda mint since 1981. In 1991, the Mexican mint also introduced the smaller denominations of 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz and 1/20 oz. The coin was redesigned as part of the 1996 issue. The resulting motif is still used today. A special feature of the Libertad is that although this gold coin does not have a minted face value, it is still legal tender in Mexico. The current value is based on the material value determined daily on the stock exchange and is calculated according to the fine weight of the national currency.

The coin is supplied in proof quality and in a coin capsule. The proof quality (PF) is particularly sought after by collectors and is one of the most elaborate production processes for a coin. In addition, the coin is very limited with a mintage of only 1.000 pieces and is therefore also very popular with collectors.

The design of the gold coin

The motif side shows the image of Mexico's winged goddess of victory. The image of the Winged Victress has existed since the 1820s and is the most striking symbol of Mexico's triumph over Spain in the War of Independence. The volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl can be seen in the background of the goddess of victory. The reverse of the Gold Mexico Libertad features Mexico's current national coat of arms and the country code “Estados Unidos Mexicanos” (“United States of Mexico”).
