The Royal Mint's Sovereign is a very popular English gold coin. It dates back to 1817, when it was reintroduced to restore financial stability after the Napoleonic Wars. The Sovereign soon became a popular trade coin and gained a reputation as the “most important coin in the world” as Britain's international importance grew. The Sovereign has been closely associated with the British monarchy since it was first minted in 1489.

The design of the gold coin

The design side shows the classic motif of St. George and the dragon by Benedetto Pistrucci, continuing the long-standing tradition of this motif on the sovereign coin. The year of minting “2024” can also be seen below the design. The value side shows the coin's portrait of His Majesty the King. The portrait, designed by British sculptor Martin Jennings, was personally approved by the monarch. Around the portrait is the inscription “CHARLES III” and the inscription “DEI-GRA-REX-FID-DEF” (King by the Grace of God, Defender of the Faith).
