With the Gold "Symbols of the Divine" 100 EUR Proof AUT - 2026 coin, the Austrian Mint launches its new collector series "Myths, Treasures and Legends", dedicated to the fascinating treasures of the Imperial Treasury in Vienna. The series draws on the cultural and historical heritage of approximately 600 years of Habsburg rule, telling the stories of significant relics, legendary treasures and religious beliefs that have shaped the history of Austria and Europe over the centuries. The first issue focuses on three extraordinary treasures: the Holy Lance, the Relics of the True Cross and the mysterious Agate Bowl, which was once revered as the Holy Grail. These precious artifacts of Christian tradition were long regarded as a connection between the earthly and the divine and played a significant role in the Habsburgs' understanding of their identity and their claim to power.

During the Middle Ages, the Holy Lance became associated with the spear that, according to Christian tradition, the Roman soldier Longinus used to pierce the side of the crucified Jesus. As an important imperial regalia, it symbolized divine protection and worldly power for centuries. The so-called Relics of the True Cross, believed according to legend to originate from the cross of Christ, were also attributed special spiritual significance. The Agate Bowl, dating back to the 4th century, fascinated generations with its exceptional craftsmanship and its supposed connection to the Holy Grail. Together, these relics represent the profound intertwining of faith, mythology and rulership throughout European history.

The gold coin is made of 1/2 oz of fine gold with a purity of 986/1000 and is issued in the highest minting quality of Proof. This elaborate minting technique gives the detailed designs a particularly refined appearance, making the coin a highly desirable collector's item. To the left of the crucifixion scene stands the Roman soldier Longinus, holding the lance with which, according to legend, he inflicted the wound on Jesus. This impressive depiction connects the Passion of Christ with the relics featured on the obverse, emphasizing their special religious and historical significance. The intricate design creates an expressive coin motif that vividly reflects the centuries-old fascination with these mysterious symbols of the divine. The obverse brings together three of the most significant relics from the Imperial Treasury in Vienna. In the foreground is the Holy Lance, featuring a centrally inserted metal pin that was once believed to be one of the nails used to crucify Jesus. Behind it is a depiction of the Relics of the True Cross in their cross-shaped reliquary, which was created after 1350. In the background is the famous Agate Bowl from the 4th century, which, including its handles, was carved from a single block of stone. This extraordinary masterpiece was long regarded as the Holy Grail and is considered one of the most impressive treasures of the Habsburg collection. The design is completed by the inscriptions indicating the face value of 100 euros, the issuing country Republic of Austria and the year of issue 2026.
