Starting with Mesopotamia, it embarks on a journey that takes this coin to Ancient Egypt, later to the Incas, the Scythians, India and finally to China.
No other precious metal is charged with as much meaning as gold. Wherever it was found in nature, people all over the world turned it into ritual objects, figurines or jewelry. Depending on the culture, it was associated with divinity, immortality, purity or power and was regarded as an attribute of gods, kings or as an earthly representative of the sun. This special coin series tells of the magic of gold, which the ancient civilizations had packed into the precious metal and which still exists today.
The second coin in the series travels to Egypt, to the time of Pharaoh Akhenaten, around 3300 years before our time. Akhenaten's son, Tutankhamun, died at the age of 20, but became world-famous thanks to the rich grave goods found in his tomb in 1922. The death mask made of pure gold in particular caused a sensation around the world. This time, the pharaoh Akhenaten and Tutankhamun's death mask are immortalized in gold on this coin.
The design of the gold coin
The value side of the coin shows various everyday motifs from ancient Egypt, with Pharaoh Akhenaten at the center. Kneeling, he pays homage to the sun god Aten and receives the lance-shaped rays of the sun above him. A pyramid and a sarcophagus form the background. The word “gold” is embossed as a hieroglyph under the pharaoh. The coin also features the inscription “REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH”, the denomination of “100 EURO” and the year of issue “2020”.
