The wedge-tailed eagle is a large bird of prey that can be found almost everywhere in Australia. Individual specimens have even been found in the south of New Guinea. The wingspan of the Wedge-Tailed Eagle can be up to 2.7 meters. The wedge-shaped tail and the small head with its large, powerful beak are typical of this eagle. The eagle feeds primarily on medium-sized mammals. It can fly tirelessly for many hours and has been known to soar to heights of 2,000 meters or more on the thermal air currents that rise from Australia's sun-drenched land. The Australian Perth Mint has dedicated the “Australian Wedge Tailed Eagle” coin series to this bird of prey. The design of the coin was created by John M. Mercanti, the US Mint's engraver.

The high relief coin in proof (PF) is supplied in a fine wooden case with a numbered certificate of authenticity. The proof (PF) is particularly sought after by collectors and is one of the most elaborate production processes for a coin. The worldwide mintage of this coin is strictly limited to 500 pieces.

The design of the gold coin

The design side of the coin shows the majestic bird of prey. Its wings are spread wide as it circles at lofty heights. In the background is a geometric pattern reminiscent of sunbeams. The motif is framed by the inscription “10TH ANNIVERSARY - AUSTRALIAN WEDGE-TAILED EAGLE” and the year of minting and fineness of the coin “2024 1oz 9999 Gold”. Furthermore, the mintmark “P125” (which symbolizes the 125th anniversary of the Perth Mint) can be seen on the design side.

The value side of the coin shows the portrait of King Charles III. Around the portrait is the inscription “CHARLES III” and the country of origin “AUSTRALIA”. The face value “100 DOLLARS” is also depicted below the portrait. Also included is a mint mark depicting a wedge-tailed eagle landing on a tree branch, the first coin design in this series.
