The Wedge-Tailed Eagle, known in German as Keilschwanzadler, is a large bird of prey found almost everywhere in Australia. Individual specimens have even been sighted in southern New Guinea. The wingspan of the Wedge-Tailed Eagle can reach up to 2.7 meters. Characteristic features of this eagle include its wedge-shaped tail and its small head with a large, powerful beak. The eagle primarily feeds on medium-sized mammals. It can fly tirelessly for many hours and is known for soaring to heights of 2,000 meters and above using the thermal air currents rising from Australia’s sun-drenched land. The Australian Perth Mint has dedicated the coin series “Australian Wedge-Tailed Eagle” to this magnificent bird. The design of the coin was created by John M. Mercanti, Chief Engraver of the US Mint.
