The Wedge-Tailed Eagle, known in German as the Keilschwanzadler, is a large bird of prey found across almost all of Australia. Individual specimens have even been sighted in southern New Guinea. The wingspan of the Wedge-Tailed Eagle can reach up to 2.7 metres. Typical characteristics of this eagle include its wedge-shaped tail and small head with a powerful beak. It primarily feeds on medium-sized mammals and is capable of flying tirelessly for many hours. It is particularly known for using the thermal air currents rising from Australia’s sun-drenched landscapes to soar to heights of over 2,000 metres.

The Australian Perth Mint dedicated the “Australian Wedge Tailed Eagle” coin series to this impressive bird of prey. The coin’s design was created by John M. Mercanti, former engraver of the US Mint.

The High Relief coin in Reverse Proof (RP) quality is supplied in an elegant wooden case with a numbered certificate of authenticity. Reverse Proof is particularly sought after among collectors and is one of the most elaborate minting techniques used for coins. The worldwide mintage is strictly limited to 350 pieces.

The Design of the Gold Coin

The motif side of the coin shows the head of a Wedge-Tailed Eagle in the foreground, with a bald eagle behind it. Both birds are depicted facing to the right. The design is framed by the inscription “AUSTRALIAN WEDGE-TAILED EAGLE”, as well as the year of issue and fineness of the coin, “2026 1oz 9999 Gold”. The Perth Mint’s “P” mintmark is also featured.

The obverse shows the portrait of King Charles III. Surrounding the portrait are the inscriptions “CHARLES III” and “AUSTRALIA”. Below the portrait, the face value “100 DOLLARS” is stated.
