The Royal Australian Mint's Australia Zoo Series started in 2020 with the Sumatran tiger. The series draws attention to the plight of endangered animal species and is aimed at newcomers and precious metal investors. This year's motif shows the giraffe, which is also the fifth and final issue in the series. The giraffe is native to Africa and is an almost endangered species due to illegal poaching and the destruction of its habitat. At Australia Zoo in Queensland, they can be seen in their African savannah habitat with their towering appearance and distinctive patterns. These graceful giants can weigh over 1,300 kilograms and grow to over 5 meters tall. Despite their impressive stature, these gentle giants are often seen in groups. This silver coin is strictly limited to 25,000 pieces worldwide and is therefore also very popular with collectors.
The design side of the coin shows a detailed depiction of a mother giraffe and her calf. The animals stand side by side, their heads almost touching, suggesting an intimate connection between the two. An African savannah landscape with trees and mountains can be seen in the background. The lettering “AUSTRALIA ZOO - GIRAFFE” is located to the side of the motif. The weight and the fineness “1oz .999 Ag” can also be seen.
The value side of the coin shows the portrait of King Charles III. Around the portrait is the inscription “CHARLES III” and the country of origin as well as the year of minting “AUSTRALIA 2024”. The face value “1 DOLLAR” is also shown below the portrait.
