Information about the new 1 ounce Britannia silver coin - with differential taxation
With the minting year 2021, the classic design of Philip Nathan's Britannia gold coin has been supplemented by new design elements and security features called “Bullion Security”. The Gold Britannia is a British gold coin that has been minted by The Royal Mint since 1987 and was the first European bullion coin made of gold at the time. The face value of the Britannia gold coin is denominated in British pounds. It is considered official currency in Great Britain. Since 1987, the gold coin has been available in the sizes 1/10 ounce, 1/4 ounce, 1/2 ounce and 1 ounce. The fine gold content of the Gold Britannia has been 999.9 since 2013. Before that, it was specified as 916.7, which corresponds to 22 carats. Until 1989, one twelfth copper was used as an alloy, which gave the coin a reddish hue. After that, copper and silver were used in the same proportions. Since 1997, a Britannia silver coin has been issued alongside the Britannia gold coin.
The design of the new 1 ounce Britannia silver coin - tax differentiated
The design side of the Britannia silver coin shows the Roman deity and personification of the country “Britannia” as a standing figure with helmet, shield and trident. This motif remained unchanged until the turn of the millennium. Since 2001, the motif of the silver Britannia has changed in vintages with odd years and remains the same in vintages with even years. Some changes have therefore been made for the 2021 mint year, which further enhance the motif of the coin. The background of the design side is refined with a wave shape. A special minting technique makes it appear as if the waves are moving when the angle of view is changed. A security feature has also been added to the motif, which shows a lock as a symbol of security when viewed from an angle of 90 degrees. If the viewer's angle of vision changes, the lock becomes a trident, one of the defining symbols of the Britannia coin. The new edition of the design side is rounded off by the Latin inscription “DECUS ET TUTAMEN” for “Glory and Defense”. The value side shows the famous portrait of Queen Elizabeth II in the design by Jody Clark. The portrait is framed by the lettering “ELIZABETH II - D-G-REG-F-D” and the face value of “2 POUNDS”.
