Since 2007, the Australian Perth Mint has dedicated the “Australian Koala” coin series to the koala. The Australian koala is one of Australia's best-known animals and has been a protected species since 1937. As an addition to the popular koala series, the Perth Mint has been issuing a 5 oz silver coin since 2014. A special feature of this coin is the high-quality refinement of the koala motif and the coin's edge with high relief and coloration in rose gold. The design of the silver coin

The design side of the coin shows a koala clinging to a tree trunk, with eucalyptus foliage in the background. The koala and the edge of the coin are gold-plated with 22 carat red gold. On the reverse is the inscription “KOALA” and the mint mark P125, which refers to the 125th anniversary of the Perth Mint. The value side shows the Dan Thorne portrait of King Charles III, surrounded by the inscriptions “CHARLES III”, “AUSTRALIA” and “8 DOLLARS”.
