This special, domed silver coin from the Royal Australian Mint is dedicated to the Year of the Snake (2025) in the Chinese lunar calendar. This reflects the traditional story in which the Jade Emperor had the twelve signs of the zodiac compete against each other in a race across a river to decide in which order they should be entered in the calendar. The sixth edition of the successful Lunar RAM series is now being released with the motif of the snake. In Chinese element theory, each character has a corresponding element that depends on the year. Specifically, 2025 is the year of the wood snake, and people born in this year are considered creative and artistic. They are also often described as talented, flexible and wise.
This exclusive silver coin is struck in proof quality and comes with an elegant coin case and numbered certificate of authenticity. The proof (PF) finish is particularly sought after by collectors and is one of the most elaborate methods of producing a coin. While only the relief of the motif side protrudes in high relief minting, the entire base of the coin is struck in a curved shape in this convex minting process. This minting process also presents the mints with special challenges. However, the effort is worth it, as both the convex and concave curvature of the coin achieve a special look. The worldwide mintage of this special silver coin is just 7,500 pieces.
The design of the silver coin
On the design side of the coin, an artistically designed snake can be seen winding elegantly around a bamboo trunk. The Chinese character for snake, the words “YEAR OF THE SNAKE”, the weight of “1 oz” and the alloy “.999 Ag” can also be seen. The value side shows the portrait of King Charles III, designed by Daniel Thorne, which is surrounded by the 12 signs of the zodiac. The current sign is positioned at 12 o'clock above the portrait. The portrait is framed by the inscriptions “CHARLES III”, “AUSTRALIA 2025” and “5 DOLLARS”.
