The second issue in the Mythical Creatures series is dedicated to the Siren. Greek mythology has produced many unique creatures and gods. Among the most famous creatures are the Sirens, mythical beings who lure sailors to their deaths with seductive songs. Sirens appear throughout Greek mythology, but are perhaps best known from Homer's Odyssey, in which Odysseus decides to tie himself to the mast of his ship to avoid temptation from the sirens.
Sirens are half-women, half-birds who play an important role in Greek mythology. In popular stories, they live on an island and lure sailors to their deaths with their irresistible song. In some depictions, sirens are depicted more like mermaids, with the upper half of a woman and the lower half of a fish.
This special high relief coin is enhanced with a colorful motif and comes in the original coin case with a numbered certificate of authenticity. The worldwide mintage is limited to 750 pieces.
The design side of the coin shows a colossal depiction of a siren. She is half woman, half fish, in full color with blue hair and a bluish-pink tail, while holding a human skull and looking at it intently. The lettering “THE SIREN” can also be seen.
On the value side is the coat of arms of the PUBLIC SEAL OF NIUE, the face value “FIVE DOLLAR”, the year of issue “2023” and the fineness “999 SILVER”. The edge is decorated with mythical sea creatures, some of which fit into a ship's helm.
