As early as the Bronze Age, the area around Hallstatt was known for its rich salt deposits. Hallstatt grew into an important trading center where the wealthiest and most advanced Europeans lived. The abundance of salt encouraged innovations that made mining easier. For the people of Hallstatt, however, salt was more than just the basis of their prosperity - it was essential for survival, as it was used to preserve food. Due to its enormous importance, it was also a central component of ritual acts. Like other valuable goods, it was often used in cults and offerings.
Numerous grave goods were found in the graves of the Hallstatt period, in particular bronze vessels, which were presumably used to provide food and drink for the journey to the afterlife. Many of these vessels are elaborately decorated, often with depictions of animals and people. Particularly striking are the depictions of waterfowl, which were probably regarded as a divine symbol. These animals, which can move on water, land and in the air, stood for the ability to enter unexplored worlds.

The design of the silver coin
The coin combines historical depictions with a modern design. The value side shows important finds from the famous prehistoric burial ground of Hallstatt: a ceremonial vessel in the shape of a cow-calf, two skeletons and ornaments from belt plates. The coin also features the inscription “REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH”, the denomination of “20 EURO” and the year of issue “2025”. Scenes of a ritual cremation are depicted on the other side. A water bird, symbolizing the divine, accompanies the scene.
