This silver coin from the Austrian Mint is entirely dedicated to the peony. The peony wishes happiness, joy and vitality. Peonies bloom only briefly, but intensely. This is symbolized by the peonies that are forever captured on the coin. As a reminder of happy times together, this rose without thorns is also a particularly sentimental gift. According to a Chinese legend, a beautiful empress ordered all the flowers in her garden to bloom in the middle of winter. All complied, except the peony. Angered by this refusal, the empress banished it to the most remote and coldest part of her empire, but despite the inhospitable environment, the peony thrived and blossomed beautifully. The empress decided to let the peony return home and declared it the “queen of all flowers”. The 10 euro coin series “With the language of flowers” is entirely dedicated to beautiful flowers and their manifold meanings. The peony coin is the sixth coin in the series.

The design of the silver coin
The design side of the 10 euro coin shows three peonies: a roughly spherical button, a half-blossomed one and one in full bloom. All three are artistic, detailed imprints of real flowers. Behind them is a band of stylized peonies.
The value side shows a young woman in profile facing left, with a laurel branch and pearls in her hair and a smile on her face. To the right of her head is a curved horn of plenty, from which calyxes of a peony and coins pour out. The portrait is framed by the country of issue “REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH”, the year of issue “2024” and the face value of “10 EURO”.
