This is the ninth coin in the Austrian Mint's Shining Ocean Worlds series. The new series from the Austrian Mint was inspired by the United Nations, which has proclaimed the “Decade of Ocean Exploration” from 2021 to 2030. The luminous marine worlds are dedicated to the underwater treasure that needs to be preserved and is endangered by mankind.
The Jamaican stingray is a fascinating marine creature that impresses with its unique appearance and its special ability to glow. Its body shape is reminiscent of an almost round and very flat disc, which allows it to move elegantly and agilely in the water. It glides through the oceans with wave-like movements, gliding along almost silently. One of the most remarkable characteristics of the Jamaican stingray is its ability to bioluminesce. In the darkness of the deep sea, it glows with a mysterious greenish light. This glow is presumably used to communicate with conspecifics or to attract prey.

The coin shows a Jamaican stingray in the center, which partially extends into the edge of the coin. Two tropical fish swim in the background and a tube sponge can be seen. A special highlight: under UV light, the brown stingray lights up and shines in a rich green. The year of issue “2024” and the name of the animal are also depicted.
The value side combines all the fascinating sea creatures portrayed in the 12-part “Luminous marine worlds” series in a delicate silhouette. Playful air bubbles dance between the animals, and a tail fin dips into the undulating surface of the sea on the right-hand edge. It also shows the face value “3 EURO” and the issuing country “REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH”.
