About the Gold Britannia

The Britannia gold coins, first minted in 1987, represent not only a milestone in British coinage history, but also a pioneering achievement in the world of investment coins. The Britannia was the first European gold investment coin and has since cemented its position as one of the world's leading investment products. Available in denominations of 1/10, 1/4, 1/2, and 1 ounce, the Britannia coin represents a significant store of value and cultural icon for both investors and collectors.

The Britannia's face value, denominated in British pounds (£), confirms its status as legal tender in the United Kingdom, although its material value usually far exceeds its face value.

Design and minting of the Gold Britannia

A special feature of the Britannia is its iconic image on the front. The image of the Roman goddess, who represents the personified strength of Great Britain, can be seen here with a helmet, shield, and trident. Originally unchanged, the Royal Mint began introducing a new design for every odd-numbered year in 2001, while the even-numbered years feature the classic motif. The reverse of the coin features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, which has been updated several times over the years to reflect the Queen's changing appearance. With the Queen's death, the reverse was replaced by the heir to the throne, King Charles III.
