About the Krugerrand – an icon among gold coins
The Krugerrand, one of the world’s best-known and most widely traded gold coins, has been a symbol of South African culture and a reliable investment opportunity since its introduction in 1967. It combines tradition with outstanding quality, making it popular with both investors and collectors.
Mintage figures and exclusivity of the Krugerrand coin
The annual mintage figures for the 1-ounce Gold Krugerrand bullion coin are impressive. These figures were published through 2013, with over 833,000 coins minted that year alone. Since then, the figures have been based on expert estimates, which are significantly higher than those published figures. In comparison, the mintage of the 1-ounce Proof (PP) coin is very limited. In 2024, only 1,000 of these high-quality collector’s coins were produced. This comparison highlights the strict limitation and exclusive nature of the Proof issues.

Frequently asked questions about the Krugerrand
Every Krugerrand coin meets the highest international standards for purity and quality. The coins are minted exclusively in South Africa, and each issue comes with certificates guaranteeing their authenticity and quality. Investors and collectors worldwide trust these standards, making the Krugerrand one of the most sought-after gold coins on the market.
The Krugerrand is distinguished by its distinctive design, which reflects both cultural and historical elements of South Africa. The obverse features a portrait of Paul Kruger, the former South African president (1882–1902), after whom the coin is named. The portrait is framed by the inscription “UID-AFRIKA-SOUTH AFRICA.” The reverse side features the year of minting alongside a springbok—a national symbol of South Africa. The background behind the springbok depicts a typical South African semi-desert landscape. The coin is available in various denominations ranging from 1/10 ounce to one full ounce and is made of a gold-copper alloy.
While the standard Krugerrand is minted in large quantities and serves primarily as an investment product, the numismatic coin—that is, the Proof (PP)—is distinguished by its special manufacturing process and limited mintage. These collector’s coins are produced in significantly smaller quantities, which enhances their exclusivity. The production of a Proof coin is extremely labor-intensive and requires special techniques to achieve outstanding minting quality. The complexity of the production process is evident right from the demanding pre-selection of the unminted coin blanks, as only flawless blanks make it to the polishing stage. In addition to the strict selection process, the dies are polished to ensure that the matte relief stands out particularly well. The surface of these coins is therefore exceptionally finely polished and features a high-contrast mirror image that stands out clearly from the matte surface of the standard Krugerrand.
In addition to the standard editions of the Krugerrand, there are also limited-edition special mintings and commemorative editions that are highly sought after by collectors. Furthermore, Prestige sets of the Gold Krugerrand, such as the Krugerrand 7-Coin Prestige Set in Proof quality, are available. The 2024 set was produced in a limited global edition of 50 pieces. It contains 7 Krugerrand coins in the following denominations: 2 ounces of gold, 1 ounce of gold, 1/2 ounce of gold, 1/4 ounce of gold, 1/10 ounce of gold, 1/20 ounce of gold, and 1/50 ounce of gold (PP), with a total fine weight of approximately 121.93g of gold. A major highlight of this set is the 1/20-ounce Krugerrand coin, as this denomination is not available separately on the market.
Since the Krugerrand is one of the world’s most popular coins, a global mintage of just 50 pieces is very limited and consequently highly sought after. The purchase prices for this rare numismatic coin are therefore high compared to the Krugerrand bullion coin. However, it also offers potential for appreciation, as collectors seek to own a complete set, which can lead to high resale prices.
