The design of the coin

The motif side features a colourful depiction of a basilisk – a legendary hybrid creature with the head and wings of a rooster, the legs of a toad and a serpent-like tail. Its origins can be traced back to antiquity, while during the Middle Ages it increasingly developed into the terrifying creature whose gaze was said to kill people or turn them to stone. Below and to the left of the basilisk are a gold-coloured ornament and a mirror, which according to numerous legends was considered an effective means of countering the mythical creature’s deadly gaze. A gold-coloured band along the edge of the coin completes the richly detailed design. Under UV light, the special colours reveal their unique effect, giving the basilisk an even more mysterious appearance.

The reverse, which features the same design on all coins in the series, depicts an ornately decorated key bearing the letter “F” – a symbol of the Fantastic Mythical Creatures. In the background is a stylised sun in the form of a paper-cut silhouette, set within a circular, subtly textured relief. Sparkling stars and playfully designed lettering further enhance the magical character of the coin.
