Information about the CuNi Luminous marine worlds “Zwergtintenfisch” 3 EUR UN - 2024
This is the eighth coin in the Austrian Mint's Shining Ocean Worlds series. The new series from the Austrian Mint was inspired by the United Nations, which has proclaimed the “Decade of Ocean Exploration” from 2021 to 2030. The luminous marine worlds are dedicated to the underwater treasure that needs to be preserved and is endangered by mankind.
The dwarf squid, a tiny master of camouflage, is a fascinating example of a symbiotic relationship in nature. Measuring just five to ten centimetres, it hunts at night in shallow coastal waters. Its secret lies in a special luminescent organ that it shares with luminous bacteria. These bacteria produce light, while the octopus provides them with protection and food. This unique partnership allows the dwarf squid to blend in perfectly with its surroundings. Seen from above, it blends into the darkness, while from below it appears as a glittering part of the water surface. During the day, it buries itself in the sand as it cannot change color

A dwarf squid is depicted in the center of the motif page, a small part of its arms protruding into the wide band of a porthole. A sea snail and coral can be seen in the background. When UV light hits the light brown and black spotted squid, it begins to glow red or blue. The whole thing is framed by a historic-looking porthole, which is decorated with a starfish and a shell. The year of issue “2024” and the name of the animal are also depicted. When the coin is illuminated with UV light, the fish begin to glow.
The value side of the coin shows the silhouettes of various marine animals that will appear in the coin series, such as the blue-ringed octopus, accompanied by air bubbles. It also shows the face value “3 EURO” and the issuing country “REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH”.
