The South African coin Gold Buffalo 1 oz Proof - Big Five Series III - 2026 is minted by the South African Mint and is the fifth and final release in the third edition of the popular Big Five coin series. The so-called Big Five comprise the elephant, lion, rhinoceros, leopard and buffalo. These fascinating animals are emblematic of Africa’s wildlife and have long been regarded as symbols of South Africa.

The African buffalo is distinguished by its powerful build, dark, coarse coat and striking upward-curving horns. A particularly characteristic feature is the massive horn base across the forehead, known as the “boss”, which provides the animal with additional protection. Buffaloes are primarily found in grasslands and savannahs, where they feed mainly on grasses and other vegetation. Despite their often calm appearance, they are considered highly defensive, unpredictable and especially dangerous when threatened or injured. They therefore symbolise strength, resilience and assertiveness.

The design of the gold coin

The reverse of the gold coin depicts a fully grown African buffalo in a powerful and dynamic pose. The animal is shown in an elevated stance, giving it a defensive and imposing appearance. Along the lower edge are the inscriptions “SOUTH AFRICA”, the series name “BIG FIVE” and the year of issue “2026”. The South African coat of arms also appears in the lower central section.

The obverse features the characteristic design of the Big Five series, with two opposing halves of a buffalo portrait. Between the two halves is a circular element displaying the face value “FIFTY RAND”, the weight “1 oz” and the fineness “Au 999.9”. The curved horns prominently frame this central section. A cattle egret (Bubulcus ibis) is subtly incorporated into the upper area, while additional buffaloes are depicted in the background. This further emphasises the African buffalo’s place within its natural ecosystem.
