The South African coin Gold Buffalo 1/4 oz Proof – Big Five Series III – 2026 is minted by the South African Mint and is the fifth and final issue of the third edition of the popular Big Five coin series. The so-called Big Five comprise the elephant, lion, rhinoceros, leopard and buffalo. These fascinating animals symbolise Africa’s unique wildlife and have long been regarded as iconic representatives of South Africa.

The African buffalo impresses with its powerful build, dark, coarse coat and distinctive upward-curving horns. A particularly characteristic feature is the massive horn base on its forehead, known as the “boss”, which provides the animal with additional protection. Buffaloes mainly inhabit grasslands and savannahs and feed primarily on grasses and other vegetation. Despite their often calm appearance, they are considered highly defensive, unpredictable and particularly dangerous when threatened or injured. They therefore symbolise strength, resilience and assertiveness.

The 1/4 oz gold coin was struck in the highest minting quality, Proof, and has a strictly limited worldwide mintage of only 2,000 pieces. Proof is one of the most elaborate coin production methods and is especially sought after by collectors. The Design of the Gold Coin

The reverse of the gold coin depicts a fully grown African buffalo in a powerful and dynamic pose. The animal is shown in an upright stance, appearing both imposing and ready to defend itself. Along the lower edge are the issuing country “SOUTH AFRICA”, the series name “BIG FIVE” and the year of issue “2026”. The South African national coat of arms is also positioned in the lower centre.

The obverse features the characteristic design of the Big Five series, with two opposing halves of a buffalo portrait. Between the two halves is a circular element displaying the face value “FIFTY RAND”, the weight “1/4 oz” and the fineness “Au 999.9”. The curved horns prominently frame the central section. A cattle egret (Bubulcus ibis) is subtly depicted in the upper area, while additional buffaloes can be seen in the background. This further highlights the African buffalo’s place within its natural ecosystem.
