Information about Gold Great Southern Land 1 oz Proof - Chrysoprase

This elegant 1 oz gold coin features an Australia-shaped insert made from chrysoprase, a natural green gemstone that is also known as “Australian Jade” due to its attractive colouring. Chrysoprase occurs in regions including Queensland and Western Australia and develops its characteristic bright green appearance after polishing. As each insert is made from natural chrysoprase, the colour and pattern may vary, giving every coin its own individual appearance. The term “Great Southern Land” refers to the majestic continent of the Southern Hemisphere that is known today as Australia. The expression reflects the unique biodiversity and landscapes for which this vast country is renowned. Among its most remarkable natural environments are the rainforests in northern Australia and along the country’s east coast. Tropical, subtropical and cool temperate habitats with high levels of rainfall, lush vegetation and dense canopies provide a unique home for numerous native animal and plant species.

The gold coin is struck in the highest minting quality, Proof. Proof is one of the most elaborate coin production techniques and is particularly sought after by collectors. The coin is presented in a premium Perth Mint case and accompanied by an illustrated outer box.  The worldwide mintage of the gold coin is strictly limited to just 200 pieces.

The design of the gold coin

The reverse of the coin celebrates the unique flora and fauna of Australia’s rainforests. Surrounding the Australia-shaped green chrysoprase insert are numerous characteristic animal species, including a flying fox, a possum, a tree snake, a kingfisher, a crocodile, a butterfly, a tree frog, a cassowary and an orb-weaver spider, along with other native bird species. The detailed design is further complemented by depictions of native Australian plant life. Also included in the design are The Perth Mint’s “P” mintmark, details of the coin’s weight and fineness, and the year of issue “2026”. The obverse of the coin features the portrait of King Charles III designed by Dan Thorne together with the corresponding face value of the coin.
