The Sovereign by The Royal Mint is one of the best-known British gold coins. Its history dates back to 1489. In 1817, the Sovereign was reintroduced in its modern form and, with Britain's growing international importance, developed into a major trade coin. To this day, the Sovereign remains closely associated with the British monarchy and the numismatic history of the United Kingdom.

The 2027 Sovereign is struck in traditional 22-carat gold (916.7/1000) and issued in the highest minting quality, Proof. The coin weighs 7.99 g and has a diameter of 22.05 mm. The maximum worldwide mintage is limited to 3,000 pieces.

The Design of the Gold Coin

The reverse features the famous depiction of Saint George slaying the dragon by Benedetto Pistrucci. First used for the modern Sovereign in 1817, the design has become one of the most iconic motifs in British coinage. The year of issue, “2027”, appears below the design. The obverse features the official coinage portrait of King Charles III. The portrait was designed by British sculptor Martin Jennings and depicts the monarch facing left. The corresponding royal inscription surrounds the portrait.
