Since 1990, the Australian Kookaburra coin has been issued annually with changing designs. Known worldwide as the Australian Kookaburra, the coin takes its name from the world’s largest kingfisher. The annually changing motifs make the Kookaburra coin particularly popular with both investors and collectors. Kookaburras are large birds measuring up to 48 cm in length, predominantly brown-grey and whitish in colour, and are native to Australia, Tasmania and New Guinea. The calls of the Kookaburra resemble loud, almost hysterical laughter, which is why the bird is often also known as the Laughing Jack.

The design of the silver coin

The reverse of the coin depicts a Kookaburra in flight above a river, framed by lush trees and rugged rocks. The design is surrounded by the inscription “KOOKABURRA”, The Perth Mint’s “P” mintmark, as well as details of the weight, fineness and year of issue “2026”. The obverse of the coin features the portrait of King Charles III. Surrounding the portrait are the inscription “CHARLES III” and the country of issue “AUSTRALIA”. Below the portrait, the face value “2 DOLLARS” is also displayed. The bird and the outer ring of the coin are gilded with 24-carat gold.
