Information about CuNi Luminous Sea Worlds “Luminous Squid” 3 EUR UN - 2025
This is the latest issue in the Austrian Mint's Luminous Sea Worlds series. The new series from the Austrian Mint was inspired by the United Nations, which has proclaimed the “Decade of Ocean Exploration” from 2021 to 2030. The luminous sea worlds are dedicated to the treasure under water, which must be preserved and which is endangered by mankind.
The luminous squid, a type of octopus, emits blue light thanks to tiny light-emitting organs (photophores) on its body. From March to May, the waters off Japan's coast light up in magical blue when the squid come close to the beach to lay their eggs. Squid move at lightning speed by pushing water in and out. All cephalopods, including the fluorescent squid, have arms that attach directly to the head. The fluorescent squid has ten arms, two of which serve as extended tentacles, while the other eight use suction cups to catch prey and guide it to the mouth.
The design of the coin
Several luminous squids are depicted on the design side of the coin, both near and far. However, these are only visible when you shine a UV flashlight on the coin. Then the swarm of squid will shimmer in blue and light purple. The navigation symbol on the left-hand side shines in green light. The motif is framed by a historical bull's eye with the year of issue “2025” and the name of the animal.
The value side of the coin shows the silhouettes of various sea creatures that will appear in the coin series, such as the blue-ringed octopus, accompanied by air bubbles. It also shows the face value “3 EURO” and the issuing country “REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH”.
