The Sovereign is a very popular English gold coin. It dates back to 1817, when it was reintroduced to restore financial stability after the Napoleonic Wars. The Sovereign soon became a popular trade coin and, with Britain's growing international importance, gained a reputation as the “most important coin in the world”. It is minted from 22 carat gold and guaranteed to five decimal places, making it the most rigorously specified coin in the world. Each coin goes through a rigorous process to ensure it meets the Royal Mint's exact minting standard, so investors can buy with confidence.
To mark the historic occasion of Her Majesty The Queen becoming the first British monarch to celebrate a platinum jubilee, the Royal Mint has minted its prestigious Sovereign bullion coins with a new design by renowned numismatist Timothy Noad.
The obverse features the classic design of Saint George and the Dragon by Benedetto Pistrucci, continuing the long-standing tradition of this motif on the Sovereign coin. Additionally, the year of minting, '2024,' is displayed below the design. The reverse shows the coin portrait of His Majesty the King. The portrait, designed by British sculptor Martin Jennings, was personally approved by the monarch. Surrounding the portrait are the inscriptions 'CHARLES III' and 'DEI-GRA-REX-FID-DEF' (By the Grace of God, King, Defender of the Faith).
The sovereign is issued as a 1 pound gold coin (weight: 7.98 grams and fineness: 916.67/1000) and as a ½ pound gold coin (weight: 3.99 fineness: 916.67/1000). Additionally, £2 and £5 Sovereign versions are available, but were primarily issued in coin sets.
